Bauhaus – State Higher School of Building and Form Construction or State House of Building. Art School that was established by architect Walter Gropius in Germany in 1919. They wanted to combine architecture, interior design, crafts, textiles and put it on the same level as fine art – uniting creativity and modern production.

The Bauhaus style had a huge influence on interior design and modern furniture, and paved the way for the way space was organized – minimalism, influencing everything from open floor plans to folding chairs.
Because the designs were simple, they could be replicated by mass production, so the Bauhaus truly created a revolution in design, making it more democratic and accessible to all.

Bauhaus designs are defined by the lack of ornamentation, using clean lines, smooth surfaces and geometric shapes. They also used materials that were new and revolutionary for the time (large furniture in the 1920’s was made of wood) – Tubular steel, glass, plywood and plastic.
